Front Cover Analysis

The masthead is bold and is in bright orange to make it stand out. Also it’s in orange to show that it’s the summer edition because orange and yellow are summer colours. Mariah Carey is on the front cover which will make listeners of her music pick up the magazine and want to read about her. It will also make the male readers pick up the magazine as Mariah Carey is a very attractive woman. She is big on the page to make her eye catching to potential buyers browsing through magazines. It also offers extras and exclusive interviews with artists like Jay –Z which will make the readers choose this magazine over another to buy. This is aimed at the target audience of teen, mostly girls, who are interested in pop music. The seasonal feel to it will also be eye catching to potential readers because the colours will brighten peoples moods compared to other magazines which may be dark and dull.

The masthead is stylistic and bold with yellow being a good choice of colour against the dark back drop. This immediately makes the masthead stand out and be more visible to readers browsing. Lil Wayne is on the front cover which immediately targets the audience who listen to Hip Hop and Rap genres of music. This audience is predominantly teenage boys.  He is one of the best artists in his genre so having him on the front cover will make readers pick it up and want to read about him. It offers extras such as exclusives with DJ Khaled and has previews of new songs by artists such as Akon! The colour of the backdrop also shows the genre of the musician on the magazine because rap is meant to be happy its all about sad times the rappers have been through so the backdrop is dark. Also you don't associate the typical listener of rap music to be interested in bright happy colours so that would not interest them at all and wouldn't match Lil Wayne on the front cover. The style of writing for 'Simply the best' is in a graffiti style writing which shows the genre of the music and that the artist has maybe had a bad upbringing in a run down area.

The masthead is not as big as the others but it stands out as it is red on a white back drop. The word 'NME' also covers up some of the picture which means that when someone is browsing through a magazine rack and sees the picture of Ian Brown they will automatically be attracted the the masthead just above it because it is eye catching. The front cover has Jay –Z on it as well as Ian Brown which will attract readers’ attention because Jay – Z is a major artist in most genres and collaborates with many artists. The target audience for this magazine would again be teenagers but of both genders which will mean more people will buy the magazine. Both of them are on the front cover because Ian Brown is doing an interview with Jay. This informs the reader of what is going to be inside the magazine before they have even read about it. This magazine also offers stories about Bloc Party and other bands and their houses. This gives you an inside look into their lives which most people who follow the bands will like.

The masthead is not very big, its situated in the top left corner of the magazine and is in red writing which is similar to NME. The masthead is hidden partly behind one of the musicians in the centre of the page. This attracts your attention away from the title and more towards the artists on the front cover because this magazine isn't well known so they will want to try and get people to buy it by having famous artists on the front cover. The Killers are on the front cover of this magazine. They represent the genre of rock and pop which has the target audience of teenagers and young adults being mostly male. They stand out because they have the band name in bright red letters across their chest with almost a show effect because it has white circles in the letters acting as lights. The Killers are top musicians in the pop and rock genre having sold millions so it would attract mainstream listeners to pick up the magazine. It offers interviews with Tom Jones and The Zutons as well as having a free CD giveaway which will make the readers want to buy that one because of its added value.

The masthead is very big and spreads across the whole top of the page. It is written in black on a white backdrop to make it stand out and it has a red ‘F’ to catch readers eyes. Katherine Jenkins is on the front cover looking bright and radiant against a dark and dim background. This will catch readers eyes as he is an attractive woman and her blonde hair will stand out against the background. The fact that she is looking into the camera gives the effect that she wants you to read it as if the story is aimed at you. Also she is a multimillion single selling artist in her genre of opera which targets middle age to elderly women. Her name is in bright pink writing to make it eye catching to the readers when they are looking through magazines. It also gives off a nice calm, gentle feel to the magazine as opera and classical music is soft and relaxing. It offers an interview with Katherine Jenkins and has a free give away of a CD as it is the Christmas edition which may make them choose this magazine over another one.

The masthead is very big and bold and it spreads across the whole of the top of the page. It is written in red on a white background to make it stand out. It is in bold to make it eye catching. The fact that it goes in front of the artists on the front will attract the attention from the title to the picture as the first thing the potential buyers will see is the title because it stands out so much. T.I is on the front cover after being photoshopped so he is completely grey. This gives a mysterious feel to the magazine as he is quite a shady character in real life. T.I is a chart topping artist in his genre of hip hop so it would attract the teenage male readers to pick up the magazine and buy it. This magazine offers a list of 51 lost albums from artists that never sold and also many more interviews with artists such as Busta Rhythmes. This could be the difference between them buying this magazine or buying another. Some of the words are in red writing which makes it stand out so people will read it before the writing turns back to black once it has grabbed their attention. The number 51 has also been emphasised to grab the readers attention because that is one of the extras that come in the magazine.

The masthead is bold and stands out because it’s in white on a black background but also it is behind the artists on the front cover so you are more drawn towards them and nothing else. This is because this magazine title will stand out a lot so potential readers will pick it up to see whats inside and then their attention will be drawn to the artists on the front because you can see the tops of their heads blocking the title. Diddy Dirty Money is a well known rapper which shows the genre of this magazine. This is aimed at teenage boys. He was formally known as P Diddy but changed his name to boost sales and popularity as if to reinvent himself. This would attract the youth area of the audience to buy this magazine. This magazine offers interviews with Diddy Dirt Money himself and also the top 42 power players of the year which is very interesting and could make readers choose this magazine over others. Also down the side it give a list of who else you can find inside the magazine. These aren't all music artists as basketball sensation Lebron James has got a section in their. This may attract basketball lovers to pick up the magazine to read the article on one of the best players in the game as well.

The masthead is bold and the ‘F’ in it stands out because it is white against a gold background. The title cover some of the picture of the artist which will draw the readers attention to the picture and away from the title because the magazine brand isn't well know. Drake is on the front cover of the magazine because he is a well known and new to the music scene doing songs with the likes of Rhianna who is also a big selling artist. This will target pop lovers to pick up the magazine. Also it is a close up of drakes face and he is wearing sunglasses which may make him seem mysterious and makes people want to find out more about him. The magazine offers exclusive interviews with Drake and also and story about a group who go to San Francisco to chase a dream of being famous. The gold block around the 'F' in the masthead then links down to where the writing is about Drake which is also in gold. This gives an 'easy on the eye' feel to the magazine and a seamless flow. The word 'Drake' is in bold letters as well which will catch the readers attention and tells the readers who the mysterious person is on the front cover if they don't know who he is already. The price of the magazine and issue number are in very small text at the top right of the page because that shouldn't be what makes someone buy the magazine the content is more important.

The masthead is small in this picture as it only takes up the top left part of the page. This however is still effective as it is in bright red lettering and gives more space for pictures and information on the front cover. This makes the front cover very easy on the eye because most people will just look at the pictures and not want to read lots of words on the cover before buying the magazine.Vampire Weekend are enlarged on the front cover. They have done this because Vampire Weekend are big in their genre of pop and it will draw people into reading the magazine. The target audience for this magazine are teenagers of both genders. There are a lot of bright colours which will also attract peoples attention and make them want to read this magazine. This magazine offers the list of top 25 bands making America cool again and interviews with top bands such as Kings of Leon and gives the chance to win VIP camping upgrades for Reading or Leeds music festival!! Festivals are massive to the target audience of this magazine so the fact that they have included Reading and Leeds Festival as their competition will mean lots more people will pick up the magazine and will want to keep looking back to see if any more amazing competitions like that ever come back up. The fact that Vampire Weekend are wearing sunglasses shows that they are still youths themselves and may also give off a summery feel as if the festivals are just about to come up so that is what they might be talking about in their interview.

The masthead is hidden behind the artist but is still visible as it is in white on a black background. This means the readers can pay more attention to the artist of the front cover than the brand name. Satyricon is on the front cover taking up the whole page. This is done to show the genre of the magazine which is either gothic or heavy metal. This will draw people who like that genre into reading the magazine which is a small majority of teenagers who are into that kind of music. It is also effective because there is no colour on the front cover it is all in grey apart from one part which is in red to signify blood. The use of a crow in this picture signifies evil which fits in well with the genre. This magazine offers exclusive interviews with the artist and also with top bands such as My Chemical Romance which are the same genre. Also it has a free poster give away of the band Slayer when the readers purchases the magazine which may tempt potential readers into buying it over another magazine. The colours however will not attract the attention of people browsing through magazine racks so they have to hope that the big picture on the front is enough to grab their attention. The price of the magazine is down by the bar code in the bottom right corner which stands out because it has a white outline to attract attention down towards it after people have looked at the front cover.

 Analysis of Results

I asked people in my class to answer some questions because they are the age of my target audience so I would get a good idea of the type of music and things they like. My first question clearly shows that the majority of people that I asked preferred R&B to any other genre that I listed which gives me an idea of what to use as my genre for the magazine. I asked my second question about how often the reader attends music concerts or festivals because it would give me a idea of how much detail and information I need to put in about concerts and festivals coming up this year. I then asked how much they would be willing to pay for a music magazine that would tell me how much I should price mine at. If I over charged then people would not buy it but the price they chose was the one I was expecting most people to answer with. My results showed that I should price it between £2-3. For my content I asked what attracts readers to a magazine and the results show that the picture on the cover is favourite closely followed by interviews. This is because it would grab their attention and then make them want to read it because of the interviews. I asked how the readers get their music because if they purchase it on Itunes they would be interested to see the UKTop40 chart to see if their purchase made a difference to the chart. My results showed that most people get their music from illegal downloads however. For all the other people who didn’t say they used illegal downloads I asked them how much they spend on music a month and it shows that most people spend £0-5 on music per month which shows either more people are getting it from illegal websites or they don’t like recent chart music.

Find Your Tribe Analysis

Find Your Tribe analysis

Find your tribe is an online questionnaire that is very well lay out. To start with, the layout is not formal at all, it doesn’t make you think that you are being asked questions at all because it makes you feel relaxed. The way the question is asked is very informal and looks as if it is aimed at teenagers because they use words such as ‘pop’ and ‘tunes’ which are works that most adults wouldn’t use. Then for the answers it has a picture for each answer which relates to it so you don’t have to do as much reading for example one of the answers says that you prefer British urban music so they put a picture of Kelly Rolland who is a well known urban and R&B singer. It also describes what each answer is in a very informal relaxed way and as if you are saying it. The fact that it is interactive as well makes it more appealing to young people. I think this because its more relaxed then having a sheet of paper in front of you with lots of boxes to fill in. I like the fact that you just click on a box and then it moves on because it adds a flow to the questionnaire.

Draft Front Cover

2 page spread Analysis

This two page spread pays main attention to the band called ‘The Joshua Code.’ You know this because of the bold stylistic lettering on the second page. The picture of the band takes up a full page on the left to make it eye catching and so the audience know who this article is about. This two page spread also has a little symbol in the top corner which tells the readers that this band will appear at Reading and Leeds festival this year! This would appeal to the target audience of teenagers between the ages of 14-19 who are most likely to buy this magazine. The black writing on the white background also makes the writing stand out a lot more compared to if it was in a different colour which will attract the audience to read it.

This 2 page spread pays attention to the band called ‘Murderdolls’. This is made obvious by their name being printed in big white letters on a dark background just above the picture of them which links the two together .They are obviously a gothic group as you can tell by the picture supplied by the magazine. This would target a smaller group of people because not everyone is gothic. You can tell they are a gothic group by the colours of darkness and red on the page and the way the band are dressed e.g. black eye liner and long dark hair. The picture of the band shows the genre and is also eye catching because this pair is out of the ordinary. This offers a review on the band and what their plans are for the future. This is shown very clearly by the layout. The layout of this magazine is in columns which are divided by a quote they have said which in in a white outline which makes it more appealing and eye catching to a reader.

This two page spread stars Joris Voorn who is a very successful solo artist so it is appealing to followers of that genre. He is a techno and house music artist which is listened to by the age range of 14-21 so is a wide range to get reading the magazine review. There is no masthead for this two page spread it only has a title which has the artists name in it which is illuminated in red colour. This tells the audience straight away who this article is about and may help them to decide if they want to buy it or not.  Because the picture of the artist takes up the whole page it makes it eye catching when a reader is flicking through the pages.  This artist isn’t the most recognisable face in the music industry so needs a bigger picture for people to recognise him instead of lots of smaller pictures.

This two page spread has the band My Chemical Romance in it which appeals to the target audience of the rock and gothic genre and teens. The headline in this is big and bold so it stands out as it is written in red and white on a black background.  This makes it eye catching to the reader and clear who the article is about as soon as the reader flicks to that page. Also it is a quote from the band which will make the readers want to read more about the story. Because the picture of the artist takes up nearly two pages it is eye catching and gives you a full insight into the band. It is also photo shopped so it is grey to set the mood of the band. The mood of this band is eerie so darkness represents them well. They are lots of miniature pictures onto the page to relate to the story and give the readers a closer insight into the band.

This two page spread stars The Black Eyed Peas who are a massive band in their genre of Hip Hop and dance and top the charts regularly with their hits. This will attract the target audience who like that music to go and buy the magazine. The masthead of this 2 page spread is written in block letters which adds a techno theme to it which is the genre of the band. It is also written in gold and silver because the lead singer Will.i.am is wearing gold and it also adds a futuristic theme to it. The picture of the band takes up nearly the whole of the two pages so it is very eye catching and also it means that the readers know instantly who is in this article. One of the paragraphs is highlighted in black which shows that this is a quote from the band which will make the readers want to find out more about it by reading it because they will think it has more inside knowledge of the band inside.

This two page spread doesn’t feature a band it just has a picture of an amplifier to show that it’s a rock themed page. This could tell the audience that it is based on the instrumental side of the music industry. The masthead of this magazine is on the right of the page and stands out because it is bold and in orange writing against a black background. This makes it eye catching and the orange lettering represents flames because rock and roll is meant to be fiery. The picture of the amplifier takes up the whole two pages so it is eye catching to a reader when they are flicking through the pages. This would appeal to people who play musical instruments or people who want to find out more about amplifiers which is a small range of people.

This 2 page spread has singer Lily Allen on the front of it which appeals to young music lovers such as teen girls as she is recent and is a chart topping singer. The masthead stands out because it is bold white writing on a black background which catches the readers eye straight away. This adds the effect as if the letters where cut out of a newspaper making it unique and eye catching to the reader instead of a normal boring masthead. The fact that Lily Allens picture take up a whole page is eye catching and effective. This is so the readers can identify who she is straight away when they flick through the pages which could lead them to buying this magazine. The way she is standing is also gripping for the reader because it looks like she is leaning towards you making you feel more involved in the story.

This two page spread stars Florence and the machine who is a very successful solo artist so she is appealing to audience who listen to pop music for all ages. This would mean that this magazine would sell better than any other because the target audience range is a lot bigger. The headline ‘got the love’ is well chosen because Florence and the machine have a song out called ‘You’ve got the love.’ This is a song that everyone can relate to because it got to number 1 for a while and had many television appearances so is well recognised and loved. This would make readers want to pick this magazine up. The fact that Florence is wearing a black dress on a white background makes her stand out and bold to draw the readers eye to it. Also the red ribbon on the table she is sitting on also is effective and eye catching. It is red because the title is ‘got the love’ and the colour red is associated with love so is fitting.

This two page spread features singer Jamelia who is a top selling artist in her genre which is R&B. She may be successful but the R&B genre isn’t very big so could lessen the amount of readers they get for that issue. This spread is different to the rest of them as it has more than one picture of the artist which makes it more appealing and also the picture acts as a backdrop so it has writing over it making it look classier. The layout with more pictures is also easier on the eye to look at because if it was just all words then it would get very tedious to read. This spread has many sub headings telling the reader straight away what this story is going to be about. This is very informative and helps separate long bits of text which readers don’t like reading.

This two page spread stars the teenagers who are a upcoming band in their genre which will make people want to read about them. By the way they are dressed you can tell that they are more of an indie/rock band which have a large target audience so could increase the amount of issues bought. The masthead to this is in bold capitals and on a blue shaded background which makes it stand out. This will be eye catching if someone is browsing through magazines looking for interesting stories. The picture of the band takes up only one page but it is still effective because the band is so original. The background to the picture which involves posters is quite eye catching and shows what the band are back which is laid back. The range of colour on this page makes it eye catching as well to a reader and keeps them interested when reading the article because if the page is plain and boring they won’t stay attentive for long.

Contents page analysis

The word contents is written in big bold black letters to make it stand out. Kanye West takes up most of the contents page. This makes his identifiable straight away to the reader flicking through the pages of the magazine. He is a captivating figure as he has many hit records so is an icon to most teen readers. This is the target audience that I’m aiming for so it is key that a well recognised music artist is in one the opening pages of the magazine to try and get the reader to buy it. Down the right hand side the contents of this magazine is listed. This has the page numbers where you can find the information in bold writing so it is obvious to the readers straight away which page they need to go to find this information. For example interviews with Kanye West are included as a key feature so are emphasised at the top of the page. This informs the readers of what’s in this magazine and makes the readers want to buy it if it relates to what they want to read.

The word contents isn’t written on this page but it has a list of everything in the magazine which is helpful for readers when deciding which one to buy. There are many eye catching pictures which will get the reader’s attention. One of these things is the back drop of what looks to be a woman shouting upside down so it is extra effective to showing the genre of this magazine and its target audience which are rock and roll type people. It offers a free single with this magazine which will attract people to pick it up and buy it as well as the detailed contents in this magazine. The pictures and different coloured writing make this contents page very pleasing to the eye because there is lots to look at and absorb. The pictures down the right hand side give an insight into what is in this magazine so can help the readers decide quickly if they want to buy it or not. The blue shade in the backdrop also creates quite an eerie feel to the magazine which sets the genre of goth and rock and roll.

This contents page contains an index with all the things that are in this magazine. This is helpful to readers straight away when they pick up the magazine and want to know what is inside it before deciding whether to buy it or not. Also on the other side it provides news from the music world and reviews trying to make the customer read and then buy the magazine. These reviews and news will be targeted at their target audience which should be late teens as they are the most frequent buyers of magazine and downloading music. The main content of the page saying ‘ALBUMS OF 2009’ shows that this is a special edition magazine as it is the end of the year so it’s recapping. The only pictures on this page are the ones from the album which help the customers to recognise which album it is. This may attract them to pick up and buy the magazine to read the reviews of the albums if they want to buy them.

The word contents is written in bold pink writing on a white background to make it stand out. This will make the readers know straight away which page they are on and will grab their attention straight away. This picture is eye catching and shows that this is a music magazine because it has a musician singing on it. It also shows the genre of the magazine which is rock and roll because the singer in the picture has the stereotypical rocket hair and skinny body. This contents page shows everything which is in it and page numbers which is informative and helps you find the information you want to read. This may influence if someone buys the magazine or not because some magazines aren’t clean in their contents page but this one has an easy to read layout.

Contents isn’t written on this page, they call it editor’s choice to make it sound classy and up market because its and opera and vocal magazine.  The general target audience for this genre of music is upper class middle age to elderly people which isn’t a very large section of the target audience for music. We know this because it says so at the top of the page. The picture on this contents page is of an opera group showing that they are natural. They do this by being shown in an ordinary street in a group acting in a relaxed manor not like they are celebrities. This contents page just has a story which obviously continues throughout the magazine about this opera group in the picture. The article is printed in white writing on a dark background which makes the words stand out more and become clearer for the audience to read.

The word contents is in the top corner of this page which means that it gives more room for the reader to find out what is in this magazine. This can be helpful if there is a lot of content or if you want to grab the reader’s attention with lots of pictures. The pictures on this contents page are of the bands featuring inside so the audience don’t have to do much reading to find out who is inside. This would divide the audiences up because some people who don’t like rock music won’t buy this magazine because it has lots of rock things in it. This contents page shows everything which is in it and page numbers which is informative and helps you find the information you want to read. The red writing for the page numbers also makes them stand out because they are bold which will make them more eye catching to the reader so they know where to search.

The word contents isn’t written on this contents page yet it still has an index down the side which is very informative to the reader when they want to find what page something is on. There is only one picture on this contents page and it is very big taking up the whole page. The picture of a car shows that this musical magazine might be of the rock genre because rockers are frequently seen in this type of car. This is eye catching to the reader. The words in the index are in different colours which stimulates the mind and make people want to read what they are. The smaller text underneath the coloured writing then gives the readers an insight to what that section is about so they aren’t led a stray by a title. All the bright colours are very eye catching and would grab a reader’s attention straight away when flicking through the pages.

The word contents  is written in bold black writing which stands out against the white background. This makes it clear to the reader which page they are reading. The picture on this contents page is of James Blunt who is a major music artist in the pop category which appeals to that target audience of all ages. This would attract a wide range of people which would increase who the amount of people who buy the magazine issue. This contents page shows everything which is in it and page numbers which is informative and helps you find the information you want to read. The bright numbers for pages down the side helps the reader identify what page something is on straight away. There is also a section called ‘Every Month’ at the bottom which asks people to send in comments and questions about the magazine and to artists which gets the readers involved which some people like.

The word contents is written in the top corner of the page in yellow writing against a black background. This grabs the reader’s attention really quickly because it stands out and yellow is a bright colour. The pictures on this contents page are of the bands featuring inside so the audience don’t have to do much reading to find out who is inside. The biggest picture tells the audience who the main article or two page spread is about in the magazine which helps them chose if they want to buy it. This contents page shows everything which is in it and page numbers which is informative and helps you find the information you want to read. All the pictures are very good to keep the reader’s attention and the layout is easy on the eye because the smaller pictures act as a border for the big picture.  The contents down the side is in yellow and black just like the word ‘contents’ which is eye catching and then there is smaller text to tell the readers what is in that section.
